The original concept placed the Momentum orange feature right at the edge of the desk, creating an overhang that wasn’t practical or strong enough to fabricate as drawn. I developed the design, bringing the feature back slightly and engineering a full internal MDF skeleton that ran through the entire desk. This made the cantilevered section strong enough to support a person while preserving the intended visual effect.

Because the desk was spray-finished and intended for repeated use after the event, the construction was designed with longevity in mind therefore, there were no visible fixings through the face.

To simplify assembly, I “IKEA-fied” the build: CNC-cut parts were labelled, corresponding references were added to the drawings, and fixing holes were pre-drilled. This reduced assembly time for the internal structure from around two and a half hours to approximately 30 minutes, with far less scope for confusion in the workshop. 2.5 hours → 30 minutes (internal frame assembly time)
