The brief was to transform a series of flowing shapes from the client’s visual identity into physical sculptural displays. The initial AI-generated concept's complex curves could not be reproduced directly using sheet material.
Drawing on my understanding of timber fabrication, I developed the forms around the real bending limits of 4mm MDF. Using Fusion 360’s Curve on Path tools, I created achievable double-curved geometry, produced realistic visualisations and tested the material physically to confirm how tightly it could bend.
The visualisation was critical to both selling the proposal and establishing an accurate target for fabrication. Once the curved surfaces had been designed, I could derive the individual background profiles from the same geometry, ensuring that every component followed the form correctly. The finished installation was practically identical to the approved visual.
This was a design-led fabrication project taken directly from concept through experimentation and modelling to workshop build. Because I was responsible for both designing and making the forms, a conventional construction drawing pack wasn’t required.
